Aerotowing with the 6 foot Telemaster Electro ARF V2

    Jason,
We met at Toledo this year and you were kind enough to come to the Aerotowing Seminar we presented. Our interest in the Telemaster as an aerotowing platform goes way back to the early 1970's. In 2007, we became serious about aerotowing again and decided to try with the Telemaster 40 kit and the Multiplex Easy Glider. This proved to be the absolute best combo for introducing new pilots to the thrill of aerotowing (IMHO of course).

Our hope of having an ARF plane to suggest to new aerotow pilots was really answered when we saw the new 6 foot Telemaster Electro ARF V2 in your booth. As soon as we got our hands on one, we equipped it just as suggested: AXI 2826/12 motor and 4-cell LiPo. The plane's flight characteristics were vintage Telemaster. We looped a tow line over the rear wing hold-down dowel and hooked up and Easy Glider Pro. Sure enough, it did the job!

That said, our experimentation with the kit version taught us a few things. One, a heavier tow plane is a good thing, and two, a bigger engine/motor is a good thing. So with this in mind, we set out to see what we could do with this new model. The wing and stab were really perfect (especially with the flaps already installed), our interest was with the fuselage.

We stripped off the covering and sheeted the fuselage on the top, bottom, and both sides with 1/16" balsa to add some mass and strength. Then we added a bolt on wing option and servo operated tow release. A new motor mount was added for a bigger motor and a slide in battery tray was designed for quick battery changes (to keep us towing as uninterrupted as possible). Here are some pictures of the process:

The motor we picked is basically similar to the AXI 4120/18. The 6-cell LiPo is a 5000mAh capacity, the esc is a Castle HV85 and the prop used is an APC-E 14x7 size. This prop may seem under size, but when aerotowing a lot more load is place upon the power system and this setup has proven to have goobs of power with not even close to an over heating problem (and this was just tested in our 95 degree weather). According to our WattMeter, this system gives us a little over 1000watts of power while drawing about 46amps.

A 30 second motor run will pull an Easy Glider Pro up to a dot in the sky! We can get about 16 tows per charge.

16 Tows! That's amazing. Nicely done.

Some additional info, we changed the gear to the Goldberg composite gear and the wheels to DuBro 4" Big Wheels. Tow planes do LOTS of takeoffs and landings, so the gear has to be up to that high level of use/abuse. The flex of the Goldberg gear and the softness and size of the 4" Big Wheels really save wear and tear on the airframe.

The all up flying weight of the plane is 8lbs. 10oz. This probably sounds overly heavy, but it really makes for a great tug. The stock Electro (being super light weight) has easily pulled around by the Easy Glider on tow. If the glider pilot turned off course, it pull the tow plane off couse too. At this weight and power, the Electro will pull the Easy Glider almost in spite of what the EZ pilot does!

Bottom line is, the stock Telemaster Electro will tow and can be used by the causal user without any modification. However, with a few changes, this can become an amazing workhorse tug that can tow all day in all sorts of conditions and and on less than ideal runways.
